## Introduction

This chapter presents a comprehensive presentation of the data analysis and interpretations of the data collected and analyzed. The findings presented in this analysis output were based on the researcher’s data using two research instruments: questionnaires and interviews.  The study examined the attitudes of the respondents towards other languages that are not their native languages.

The response rate received was encouraging and provided adequate data for the analysis and reporting. In most previous studies on different topics, the researchers have reported a response rate of 60% reasonable and more than 70% excellent. In the light of these assertions, the response rate for the current study was significant. The study presented the findings using frequency distribution on tables and bar graphs, as shown below.

The findings in table one show that more respondents stated that English is their native language. This was at a high of 82.4%. Those who had Tamil as their native language were the lowest at a low of 5.9%. Finally, the respondents composed of other minor languages were recorded as ‘others’.

These were made up 11.8% of the total respondents; this portion was made of whose native language was Russian, Filipino, Hindu, Telugu or Bulgarian. Concerning the age of the respondents, the findings show that there were more respondents above 30years, at 56.5%. Those who were 18-30years old were at a high of 43.5%. The results show that the age of the sample population was normally distributed between the youth and the older adults.

On the question of any other language spoken by the respondents, English mainly was understood by most people, with most respondents having the ability to read, write and communicate comfortably in English at a high of 21.2%. However, the most significant portion of the respondents, 40% of the people who took part in the study, stated that they could not speak any other language.

A portion of the respondents could speak in Spanish (7.1%); those in Tamil were at 5.9%, which was a tie with those who could converse in Hindu. The smallest portion of the respondents was made of the people who could speak German at 1.2%. These findings show that most respondents could not speak in any other language apart from their native languages. This shows the lack of interest and dislikes for other languages.

The study also shows that if one has an interest and a positive attitude towards any language, they can learn and understand the language very fast. The findings also show more male respondents at 63.5%, compared to the female respondents at 36.5%. Those who agreed to have studied or taken a course on linguistics to learn another language were 29.4%. These respondents were lower than those who stated that they did not take any linguistic classes to learn another language. This was at 70.6%.

On the question of the language likes and dislikes, the findings show that most respondents said they like French at 22.4%. This was tied with those who wanted English and other languages, which were also at 22.4%. The smallest portion of the respondents stated that they like how the Dutch language sounds; this was at 2.4%.

The findings also show that even though most people did not feel like the other languages were their native languages, they still found them good. They still felt like their sounds were beautiful and interesting. This is because these languages are new and beautiful to them; they may be more interesting because they are unfamiliar. However, the respondents did not like or feel like all the languages were appealing to them.
