The first time I stripped down a seized bicycle hub, I expected a simple fix; instead I found a puzzle of bearings, torque and friction. Understanding why that mechanism failed, and rebuilding it so it ran smoothly, is exactly why I want to study Mechanical Engineering.
My A-level studies in Mathematics, Physics and Design Technology have given me the analytical foundations this course demands. Mechanics modules, from resolving forces to modelling motion, are consistently my favourite, because they translate abstract equations into predictions I can test against the physical world around me.
Physics taught me to respect assumptions. When calculating the load on a cantilever, I learnt that ignoring a beam’s own weight produces answers that are neat but wrong. That habit of questioning simplifications, rather than accepting them, is something I want to develop through rigorous engineering analysis.
For my Design Technology coursework I designed and manufactured a small wind turbine to charge a phone. Iterating the blade profile taught me more than any textbook could. My first design stalled badly; only by researching aerofoils and lift did I recognise where my geometry failed.
That project introduced me to computer-aided design and basic finite element thinking. I modelled the mounting bracket, then deliberately overloaded it in simulation to find its weakest point. Watching predicted stress concentrations appear exactly where the real prototype later cracked was genuinely thrilling, and confirmed my direction.
To test my interest beyond coursework, I completed a week of work experience with a local manufacturing firm. Observing engineers balance tolerances against cost showed me that real design is rarely about a single optimum; it is about disciplined compromise under constraints I had never previously considered.
I have also read widely to deepen my understanding. Volunteering weekly at a local care home has been equally formative. Explaining unfamiliar technology to residents forced me to communicate clearly and patiently, reminding me that engineering ultimately serves people, and that empathy matters as much as technical competence when designing anything useful.
Captaining a five-a-side football team has strengthened my leadership and resilience. Organising fixtures, motivating teammates after defeats and adapting our tactics mirror, in miniature, the collaboration and iterative improvement I expect to encounter throughout an engineering degree and my later career.
I am drawn to this course by its combination of strong theoretical grounding and hands-on design projects, alongside opportunities for an industrial placement. I am especially keen to explore thermofluids and dynamics, fields where I can apply mathematics to tangible, real-world challenges.
Mechanical Engineering appeals to me because it turns curiosity into capability, letting me understand systems and then improve them. I am ready for the demands of degree-level study, and I am determined to become an engineer who designs thoughtfully, rigorously and responsibly.
