The first time a program I had written did exactly what I intended, I felt a quiet thrill that has never quite left me. It was only a simple script to sort a list, yet the idea that logic alone could produce behaviour fascinated me.

I wanted to understand what was happening beneath the syntax.

That curiosity pushed me towards Computer Science as a discipline rather than a hobby. I wanted to know how compilers translate my instructions, how memory is managed, and why some algorithms scale gracefully while others collapse under larger inputs. Studying the field seriously felt like the natural next step.

My A-level studies gave me the foundations I needed. Mathematics has been central, particularly discrete topics, calculus and proof, which trained me to reason precisely and to justify each step of an argument. This rigour maps directly onto writing correct, provable code.

Physics complemented this by teaching me to model messy real-world systems with clean abstractions, while further mathematics deepened my comfort with matrices and sequences. I found recurrence relations especially rewarding, because they mirror the recursive thinking that underpins so many elegant algorithms.

Beyond the syllabus, I taught myself Python and later some Java, working through problems on online judges to practise algorithmic thinking.

Wider reading also shaped me: a popular account of the Turing machine made abstract computation feel tangible, and articles on machine learning showed me how mathematics and code combine to find patterns in data.

To test my understanding, I built a small web application that let users track shared expenses within a household. Designing the database schema and handling edge cases taught me that real software is defined by the awkward exceptions, not the happy path. Debugging it patiently was frustrating and genuinely instructive.

A part-time retail role sharpened skills that classrooms rarely reach. Serving customers during busy periods taught me to stay calm under pressure, to communicate clearly, and to solve problems quickly when systems failed. Balancing these shifts with demanding coursework forced me to organise my time with real discipline.

Volunteering at a local coding club for younger pupils was equally valuable. Explaining loops and variables to complete beginners made me articulate ideas I had taken for granted, and I learned that patient teaching often reveals gaps in my own understanding that I then went away and filled.

Outside academics, playing in a five-a-side team has taught me to collaborate, accept feedback and contribute to a shared goal, all of which I recognise as essential to software engineering, where projects are rarely built alone. I enjoy the accountability that comes with being part of a team.

At university I am eager to study theory more deeply, from computational complexity to artificial intelligence, and to apply it through substantial projects. In the longer term I hope to work in a field where software solves meaningful problems, perhaps in healthcare or sustainability.
